2nd IAA Conference on Space Situational Awareness

January 14-16, 2020
Hilton Arlington, Washington, D.C., USA

Due to the generous sponsorship from the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department of the University of Florida (UF) invites you to attend the second International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) Conference on Space Situational Awareness (ICSSA). The ICSSA will be hosted at the Hilton Arlington, in Washington, D.C., USA, from January 14th to January 16th 2020.

The foremost purpose of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is to provide decision-making processes with a quantifiable and timely body of evidence (predictive/imminent/forensic) of behavior(s) attributable to specific space domain threats and hazards. The conference will cover broad-ranging technical and policy related aspects associated with the topic of SSA. Over the past two decades, SSA has evolved into a high-impact, multidisciplinary field of research. The magnitude and complexity of its constituent lines of inquiry are growing at rapid pace, driven by the increasing number of objects of interest, including resident space objects: RSOs (a collective term for active spacecraft and space debris) as well as near Earth objects: NEOs (comets and asteroids in Earth’s vicinity). Combining its various “notions”, SSA today spans research in areas of RSO/NEO sensing, identification, forecasting, tracking, association, risk assessment, resource allocation, spacecraft control, information & communication, proximity operations, debris removal, space weather, drag-controlled re-entry, alternative (non-propulsive) deorbiting technologies, liability and insurance issues and a host of other related topics. Continued sustainable access and utilization of space relies on the awareness of its environment, both from the perspective of human operators on the ground and autonomous spacecraft during flight. Moreover, as the nature and number of participants utilizing the space environment grows, there is critical need for steadfast governance driven by a coherent space policy.

Conference Co-Chairs:
Riccardo Bevilacqua, University of Florida
Moriba Jah, University of Texas at Austin
Mrinal Kumar, Ohio State University

Organizing Committee Members:
Jeng-Shing (Rock) Chern, Canada

[BinAst5] 5th Binary Asteroids in the Solar System Workshop: First Call

All,

The first Binary Asteroids in the Solar System Workshop was held in Steamboat Springs, CO, in 2007. The workshop has been held every three years since in Poland, Hawai'i, and the Czech Republic.

It is time for the 5th workshop, which will return to Colorado, this time in Fort Collins, near the Colorado State University campus, on 2019 September 3-5.

Details are available at

        <http://binaryast5.org/>

Registration and abstract submission are now open.

We appreciate that the dates are squeezed in around other major meetings such as EPSC/DPS in Geneva, but we hope to fill the registration list to maximum anyway.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 60. Keep that in mind if you tend to procrastinate (the U.S. shutdown notwithstanding).

The workshops are characterized by a relaxed atmosphere and free format, with almost as much time for discussion as for the presentations themselves.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together various ideas on the detection, characterization, formation, and implications of binary and multiple objects among the NEO, main-belt, Trojan, Centaur, TNO populations. We hope to include all of the many modes of observation, in all of the dynamical populations, as well as theory and numerical modeling of formation and evolution of these systems. We especially welcome the new topics of rings of small bodies, and heliocentric orbital pairs of asteroids and their implications.

A reception will be held Tuesday (Sept 3) evening followed by two full days of oral presentations (Sept 4-5). A separate room will be available for posters.

There should be some funds available for students to either waive the registration fee or for travel support.

Students hoping for a grant should register soon. No payment will be required at the time. However, registering will reserve a seat in the meeting room pending review of the request.

We're looking for a few good professionals to serve on the SOC. If willing, please send me an email off-line.

As the head of the English department at a well-known college once wrote, "Looking forward to hopefully seeing you there."

https://www.esa.int/About_Us/ECSL_European_Centre_for_Space_Law/The_ESA-ECSL_Space_Debris_Regulation_Standards_and_Tools_Workshop

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL) are proud to announce a collaborative workshop addressing space debris, to be held from the 19th to the 21st of March 2019 at ESA ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany.

Space activities are expanding in terms of both volume and geographical distribution of space actors. As a consequence, many governments are currently seeking to embrace the dynamic development in their countries by establishing the required regulatory and administrative framework. Space debris mitigation is a challenge often addressed in this context, as it not only involves law-making but also requires implementation according to standards and a transparent verification process.

This interdisciplinary workshop aims to assist legislators, mission designers and approving authorities in addressing space debris at their respective levels in a coherent way and according to best current practices. At the same time, this workshop will provide a platform for all of them to network and share their experience. The Workshop will consist of three days:

  -  The first day, will look at the legal framework relevant for space debris mitigation and active debris removal (ADR) on both an international and national level. The aim is to learn and discuss how to establish adequate regulatory regimes and ensure compliance by national actors, and what requirements should be imposed to mitigate further debris and facilitate for ADR.
  -  The second day, will discuss non-legally binding standards which are often called upon in implementation processes or even regulation, as well as the procedures already used by ESA in the review process of the Agency’s own missions. This includes an introduction to the ESA Space Debris Mitigation Verification Handbook and the ESA Re-entry Safety Handbook.
  -  On the third day, ESA will present and officially release the latest version of the MASTER (Meteoroid and Space Debris Terrestrial Environment Reference) and DRAMA (Debris Risk Assessment and Mitigation Analysis). These tools, , offered by ESA since about 10 years, are applied world-wide by a large community of users for the verification of the implementation of space debris mitigation measures in a mission.

The workshop targets professionals from government, industry, space agencies and international organisations who work on space debris matters. Priority is given to individuals involved in drafting or implementing space-debris related laws and regulations, be it at technical level for space mission planning or at administrative level for licensing space activities. The workshop is also open to students on a non-priority basis.

Registration:

We invite those interested to complete the registration form in order to apply to be a participant; selected candidates will receive an additional confirmation email once accepted.

You may register for one, two or all three days, but preference is given to those who can attend all days. There will be 80 places available. Participation in the workshop is free of charge.

Registration is available here: https://indico.esa.int/event/282/

AstroRob2019 (Sep 30-Oct 4, 2019) First Announcement

Dear colleagues,

Following the success of the previous five workshops in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019, it is a pleasure to announce the 6th Workshop on Robotic Autonomous Observatories (AstroRob 2019), to be held in
Torremolinos (Málaga), Spain on Sep 30- Oct 4, 2019.

Ten years after the celebration of the First Workshop on robotic autonomous observatories in Málaga, the number of automatic astronomical facilities worldwide has significantly grown, as well as the level of robotisation, autonomy, and networking, with many recent developments motivated by the search of new electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waves in the next months. This has a strong impact in many other astrophysical fields, like fireballs detection, minor planet studies, the search for extra-solar planets, the monitoring of variable stars in our Galaxy, the study of active galactic nuclei, the detection and monitoring of supernovae, and the immediate follow-up of high-energy transients such as cosmic gamma-ray bursts, besides the search of neutrino and gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts. Last, but not least, space debris surveillance and tracking is another field of increasing interest. Educational aspects will be also covered.

The Scientific Organizing Committee will try to work on a very dynamic program, dealing not only with scientific and technical issues but also with educational and open science aspects. The workshop will be host in Hotel Smy Costa del Sol (same hotel as in the 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, a hotel which has just been refurbished) in Torremolinos, Málaga (Spain) just at the beach forefront and 10 min from the Malaga International Airport. Your family is most welcome if they also want to relax while you are attending the Workshop (check special discounts). Temperatures are still very pleasant at that time of the year (early Autumn) and swimming in the Mediterranean see is feasible. For the second time, the Workshop time will take place around the famous Torremolinos’s San Miguel Fair so we will also plan some activity around this celebration (Sep 29-Oct 2).

This Sixth Workshop will be hosted by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC) and the Department of Systems Engineering and Automatics (ISA-UMA) under the auspices of the Spanish Research Council
(CSIC) and the Universidad de Málaga.
