Announcement: Sixth International Workshop on Cometary Astronomy
Date: Wednesday, 2017 August 23
Venue: Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
In the planning for decades, an international meeting on cometary
astronomy (
http://www.icq.eps.harvard.edu/IWCA.html) will be held
in Saint Louis, Missouri, on 2017 August 23 (Wednesday), two days
after the total solar eclipse that will be visible nearby. Our
comet meetings have been held near the time of such astronomical events
as eclipses to draw potential comet observers who are travelling
to view those big events. The 2017 meeting will be co-sponsored by
the International Comet Quarterly (ICQ) and the Department of Earth
and Planetary Sciences at Washington University and held on the
Washington University campus.
A good slate of speakers is being put together from both the
professional and amateur communities, as is the goal for the IWCA series.
We had very successful IWCAs in Shanghai, China, after the 2009
solar eclipse there, and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the time
of the 2009 IAU General Assembly. We aim for a good mix between
professional and amateur astronomers to exchange ideas and discuss
how amateurs can better contribute to the science of cometary astronomy
in standardized ways.
We currently have a half dozen speakers lined up. It is assumed
that we will have about three times that many speakers in August.
Potential speakers are encouraged to contact Dan Green (email address
dgreen at eps.harvard.edu) as soon as possible with proposed talk title
and abstract. Also, if you are interested in attending this meeting,
please let us know via email (icqcsc at eps.harvard.edu).
The formal meeting will be held in Rudolph Hall at the University
during 9:00 am-5:00 pm on August 23, with informal meetings on the
evenings of August 22 and 23 in the vicinity of Washington University.
Every effort will be made to keep registration costs low ($25 or less
-- hopefully far less). Additional details will be posted at the
following website as they become available, including a list of speakers:
