Binary systems, their evolution and environments

Ulaan Baatar 2014 Sep 01-05

Dear colleague,

Although we emailed you earlier that the conference on binaries in
Mongolia (1-5 September 2014) was full, in the mean time a few spaces
have opened up. We are pleased to offer you one of the free spaces.
Could you please let us know as soon as possible whether you will be
able to attend? We would appreciate a response by 23rd May if possible.

Please note that if you need a visa to enter Mongolia, you will need
to send us your details (see
http://mongolia.csp.escience.cn/dct/page/65584) by 1st June!.

Best regards,
Richard de Grijs

Gaia-FUN-SSO 3rd Workshop

Third Workshop on the Gaia Follow-Up Network for the Solar System Objects
to be held in Paris Observatory, PARIS, France
on November 24-26, 2014

URL: http://www.imcce.fr/hosted_sites/gaiafun2014/

(1st Announcement, 25 May 2014)
***********************************************************************

Scientific Rationale

The Gaia satellite has been launched on December 19, 2013 and the operations have begun in 2014. During this mission, Solar System Objects (SSO) will be observed by Gaia and their state vector will be measured with an unprecedented precision. New objects will certainly be detected; among them probably interesting ones such as NEAs. Nevertheless, due to the constraints imposed by its scanning law, Gaia will not be able to monitor these objects and to improve their provisional orbital model. Therefore complementary ground-based observations are required. During the previous years, this ground based activity has been organized through the set-up of the Gaia-FUN-SSO network. This task is performed in the frame of the Coordination Unit 4 of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, devoted to the data processing of specific objects. Several training observation campaigns have been performed and, in 2014, the real Gaia astrometric alerts are arriving.

The goal of the network is to recover newly detected targets by astrometric observations on alert; so that a preliminary orbit can be computed at IAU/MPC. This activity is coordinated by a central node at IMCCE, Paris Observatory, interacting with the Gaia daily data processing all along the mission. We organize this year a new Gaia-FUN-SSO workshop in Paris in November 2014 in order to discuss the first months of activity of this network. During this workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to be informed about the status of the Gaia mission, about the alert process for SSO and about the ground-based data processing. But they will also be invited to present their feedback information in relation with this program, or to present their equipment, instruments and observing sites, and discuss tuning of the alert strategy. Large time slots will be reserved for discussions.

Dear colleagues, dear members of the programme committee,

We are pleased to inform you that the United Nations/Austria Symposium on “Space Science and the United Nations” is one of the activities of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications in 2014 endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Symposium, co-sponsored by the Government of Austria, the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the European Space Agency (ESA) will be held in Graz, Austria, from 22 to 24 September 2014.

Its primary objectives will be to:

- Briefly review the history and assess the past accomplishments of the Basic Space Science Initiative under the United Nations Programme on Space Applications as well as relevant past and on-going activities of other United Nations entities;

- Discuss the future role of space science under the framework of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications and compile a preliminary list of possible actions and activities that could be conducted under the leadership of the United Nations or in cooperation with other relevant entities.

In doing so, the Symposium will reflect where the field of space science is heading and what roles international cooperation and capacity building may be playing. The secondary objectives of the Symposium will therefore be to:

- Bring together representatives in policy- and decision-making functions of major governmental and non-governmental organizations active in the space science field to present and discuss their relevant activities, in particular contributions to capacity building and international cooperation in space science, including in developing countries;

- Discuss forthcoming and planned space science related activities in the World and consider the possible opportunities they may offer for capacity building and international space cooperation.

Symposium participants should be involved in policy- and decision-making functions in the planning or implementation of space science activities in international or national space agencies, governmental or non-governmental organizations, research institutions, industry, universities or other academic institutions. The selection of participants will be based on their anticipated contributions to address the objectives and questions laid out in the attached information note. Applications from qualified female applicants are particularly encouraged. Invited participants will receive a formal invitation letter.

We invite you and/or your interested colleagues to consider participating in this event.

Application forms and the latest information on the Symposium can be obtained from the Symposium webpage at http://www.unoosa.org/oosa/en/SAP/act2014/graz/index.html.
Please kindly complete the online application form at the above website. The deadline for receiving applications is 20 July 2014.

The co-sponsors will provide limited funding support for air travel and accommodation  on a competitive basis to qualified applicants to attend the Symposium.
Meals and receptions will be provided by the co-sponsors. There is no registration fee for this event.

If you or your organization is interested in contributing to the Symposium Programme or if you have any other question related to this event, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,
Werner Balogh
